Will the FCC open up the cable market?

The FCC apparently wants to open up the cable market. This could lead to brand new buisness models and new services.

My guess is that this will take a long time to happen. It always does. Just look at digitalTV, open cablecard, DVRs et al.

But I think the stakes are rising for cable operators. Telcos aren’t standing still. Verizon Fios is a big deal. Innovation online is happening faster than ever. And now the FCC is after them.

Here are a few things I would do if I was at a cable operator today:

-Stop fighting your consumers. Stop forcing folks to watch commercials. Stop throttling back internet usuage. It’s a waste of time. It’s the same as apple trying to stop the hackers. Bad game. No one wins.

-Allow any & all content provider to host/publish their video content to your VOD servers. Storage is not an issue. But I know that bandwidth isn’t free. So sell ads on VOD. Charge a nominal amount to the content provider if the ad revenue doesn’t cover the cost of the network.

-Now the resistance you may get from long tail content owners on the above idea is that navigation/discovery on VOD is too hard for most consumers. So do a deal with Google and/or MSFT and let them offer a better guide experience with search. Sell keywords that content folks can bid on. You’ll get paid in both directions.

-Launch BetterTV

-Invest in broadband video. Get hbo and other premium content online. Launch a killer cdn for 3rd parties. Acquire a top tier UGC video service.

I don’t know if the FCC will succeed in getting their wish. But it may not matter.

The market also has an opinion

They want a change too.

Apple iPhone sw update breaks hacks again

So the cat and mouse game continues.

This is the first apple update I’m not going to install on my iPhone. My hacked iphone finally gives me the feature I’ve been waiting for. Contact search.

Apple’s updates have to better than the hacks if they want to keep playing this game.

Or I suspect there will be many folks like me that we stay a few versions behind and keep their community functionality.

Thoughts about Tumblr

Saw two great Tumblr related quotes on David’s tumblelog today:

“Tumblr has reinvigorated my love for having my own website. And having my own website is like being a homeowner. If your website is a MyFace profile, it’s like you live in a housing project” — jakoblodwick

“i just subscribed to a shit load of more tumblogs. why does this feel like the best social networking ever? it’s like myspace for independent minds. we’re not messaging each other, we’re bearing witness to each other’s lives. it’s like how good relationships are about turning outward rather than to each other.” via Sam Reich

(disclosure: we are investors in Tumblr)

FlickrFan – another killer app from Dave Winer

Dave Winer has graciously allowed me to use some of his software before releasing to the general public.

I’ve already written about how much I enjoy his Flickr-to-Twitter.

And tonight Dave turned me on to one of his latest creations. It’s called FlickrFan. It’s still in what he calls pre-alpha mode.

I won’t describe details on how it actually works but it’s an elegant, simple way to have flickr photos sent to your HDTV. It can work on any display. Yet having these photos on a HDTV monitor is magical.

And FlickrFan does more than that. It grabs feeds for all of your flickr photos and all of your Flickr contacts as well. In my case it’s several of my family members and good friends. Having those pics rotate in random order on my HDTV is so damn cool. The first photo that showed up on my TV was my brothers kids. Beautiful. And it also mixes in photos from a major news provider (I’m not sure Dave wants me to mention their particular name).

Personal photos, friends & family photos, news photos and other network data automatically sent to my HDTV is defining my new connected family room.

And that is a powerful thing.

I love acoustic versions of rock songs. Here’s an acoustic version of Intervention by Arcade Fire. They are absolutely one of my favorite live bands. If they come to a town near you make sure you check them out.

Tumblr 3.0 is alive

David and Marco flipped the switch and launched Tumblr 3.0 today.

It’s a beautiful upgrade and the amount of new capabilities is truly stunning. (Yes, yes. I’m biased. I’m a user and an investor.) For a complete overview of Tumblr 3.0 check out David’s post here.

My favorite things in v3.0 include:

  • amazing new UI
  • easy Disqus integration
  • mp3 posting support
  • auto format/sizing for video and photos
  • and a killer Tumblr archive feature. Check out bijansabet.com/archive

Tumblr is the easiest way to blog and share your interests. The Tumblr bookmarklet is addictive because it’s crazy easy. My friend Prashant tried blogging on traditional platforms and claims that he’s not a “real blogger”. I know the feeling. Traditonal blogging can be too hard. I’m glad he’s using Tumblr because his tumblelog is wonderful.

Congrats to David and Marco. They worked an insane amount of hours getting this out the door and it paid off.
