The future of the public library

On Saturday night, lauren and I walked passed the Boston Public Library. For those of you that haven’t been to the BPL, it’s simply beautiful.

We got into talking about the future of libraries in a world of iphones, kindles, blackberries, netbooks, wifi, mifi, etc.

And I’m not sure I’ve come a conclusion yet. Last night I thought about it again outloud on twitter.

I got back a bunch of responses:

I’m not ready to write off our public libraries just yet. They are an important part of the community. But their future needs to be defined. Or they will become museums.

And that would be a shame.

Sadly Beautiful – The Replacements

Many die hard fans of the Replacements never got into the album All Shook Down. It took some time to grow on me but I think it’s great.

Kindle vs Kindle

I don’t own a Kindle. I’ve tried the original Kindle and l also played with my friends Kindle DX.

I just don’t want to carry around another separate device. It just not for me.

Last week my friend Stu told me to download the Kindle app for iPhone. I did it at the time but I thought I’d never want to read an actual book on the iPhone.

Also at Stu’s recommendation I purchased Ultimatum by Matthew Glass and have been reading it with the Kindle iPhone app. It’s fantastic (and a great story too).

Sure the screen is small but it’s always with me which means I can “snack read” anytime and anywhere I want. It’s a completely new experience in reading books for me.

I’m sure many people think this is insane. The Kindle screen vs iPhone screen may seem like a no brainer.

but this reminds me of the same reason I end up using the (crappy) camera on the iPhone more than my Canon 40d. The iPhone is just way more conveninent even though the Canon takes beautiful photos.

The choice is clear for me.

Techmeme for baseball

I read Techmeme just about every morning. Sure it misses important tech news from time to time. Yet the benefits outweigh any shortcomings by a country mile. Smart aggregation.

A few weeks ago, I sent an email to my friend @Om (fellow yankee fan) and asked him for recommendations on a some yankee blogs. Om suggested a couple of great ones, including River Avenue Blues. It’s quite good. But I want more.

And then the other day I stumbled on Ballbug. I saw the link on Techmeme’s sidebar. I had seen it there forever but never paid attention until now. It’s excellent.

Ballbug is techmeme for baseball. Blogs combined with mainstream media, aggregated and filtered.

Love it.
