I’m delighted to announce our latest investment – Academia.edu based in San Francisco. We led the round along with True Ventures.
Academa.edu has built the best and fastest growing social platform for researchers and academics to share and follow research. They have fantastic tools to upload, organize, share and track papers. And the community is super engaged.
The founder/ceo Richard Price did his PhD at Oxford and was inspired to create Academia.edu after finishing his PhD at Oxford and realizing there was no platform where he could instantly share his papers with his research community. Here’s Richard profile.
We love the vision behind Academia.edu. The company’s mission is to accelerate the world’s research. The broader trend that Academia.edu is part of, and helping shape, is “Open Science”. Just today my friend Fred wrote a post calling for Open Science, and I couldn’t agree more. Traditional gatekeepers in this market have been doing their best to keep such important content controlled and locked behind paywalls – and as a result making it less accessible.
Richard and his team of 6 people are actively hiring software engineers so if you have a passion for this area please send me your resume or Stack Overflow profile.
