Why should California employees have more rights than everyone else?

Most the feedback I’ve recevied offline & online since my weekend post about getting rid of non-competes has been positive.

But there have certainly been those that want to keep the status quo and have their thoughtful reasons supporting their position. Fred, who I respect and like a lot, isn’t excited about this idea (my comment to his post here). I had a feeling that this wasn’t going to be a slam dunk movement :)

For me this whole notion that California employees & entrepreneurs should have more rights than everyone else just doesn’t make sense to me.

Update: Scott Kirsner has a follow up post and links to recent research from Harvard about the negative impact on non-competes in Michigan.
