Switching from Comcast TV to Verizon
In the late 1990’s, the war for pay television services was between cable and satellite.
At the time, satellite television was the challenger and bringing a host of innovative services and content like the NFL Sunday ticket, HD, UlimateTV, TiVo, etc.
But cable came back with DVR, VOD, HD and bundled voice and high speed internet access. That’s a package satellite couldn’t deliver.
Ten years ago, I didn’t think the telcos had a chance to compete. Even though they had strong balance sheets, I didn’t think they could effectively compete with cable for the “triple play” - tv, internet, telephony.
But it looks like I was wrong.
When we moved into our new place last summer, we dropped Comcast internet and switched to Verizon FIOS. I’m getting 20mbps upstream and downstream. It’s dream. We signed up for telephone service from Verizon as well.
Later this morning we are switching to Verizon Fios TV service. Why?
Few reasons:
-the bundle is cheaper given our loyalty to FIOS internet
-I’ve read that HD with Verizon is better than HD on comcast. We’ll see if that’s true
I’m particularly looking forward to checking out the Verizon user interface. The Comcast user interface is long in the tooth and needs major improvement. My guess is that the Verizon UI will be disappointing as well.
One thing is pretty clear. Pay television is not cable’s birthright. The telcos are going to give cable a run for their money.
