The Power of Open Source

Peter Semmelhack, who is the founder of Bug Labs, told me once that if you were going to start a direct competitor to Microsoft today you would have to embrace open source. There would be no other option.

MySQL took that recipe and did very well with it.

We are now seeing the power of open source everywhere. Even the auto industry is embracing it.

And now we have Google’s Android. We don’t even have meaningful volume yet and developers, handset manufacturers, carriers and consumers are excited about what this all means.

Motorola is now putting a signficant amount of resources behind Android for their next generation smart phones. If you want to compete with Microsoft Mobile or the iPhone, you gotta go open source

So what are the next areas where open source will change the game?

Here’s what I’m thinking:

-open source consumer electronics

-open source software in set top boxes

-open source games

-open source social networks

What’s next?
