Sony: so close yet so far

I’ve been a fan of Sony products for a long time. But somewhere and somehow they lost their way.

They should have owned the digital camera market but they don’t.

Same thing with video cameras and mobile phones.

They have an amazing combination of technology & content though and the PS2/PS3 is still huge.

The NYT covers Sony’s recent announcement to release the movie “Hancock” on certain Sony tv’s for internet delivery before they are released to the DVD rental market but after the theatre release window. The NYT calls this an “industry first”.

This isn’t the future Sony. A more interesting idea would be to release it online for all to buy or rent at the same time as the theatre release. Maybe even charge a premium for the HD version even.
