My new TV and a few initial observations
We had a tv installed in our new house yesterday in our family room. Based on some great recommendations from an earlier blog post we ended up buying the Pioneer Elite. We had it professionally installed because we wanted to plasma mounted on the wall and all of the a/v components live in a separate closet.
Few observations:
-Plasma’s are thin but they are still really heavy. The mount that is holding my plasma to the wall can probably hold a sherman tank to the wall as well. OLED is a very promising technology to help make it even thinner but there are some real challenges making them bigger than 11 inches at any reasonable cost. There are some innovative ideas coming down the pike and that’s very exciting.
-we need wireless hdmi. The installation took 7+ hours. Most of it was wiring related. They drilled holes, snakes, put in conduits etc. Wireless HDMI would be a dream.
-When the installers left my house I had 5 remote controls waiting for me. That is a non starter. I will get rid of all them this weekend and make them all work with my favorite remote controls.
-The Pioneer Elite picture quality is stunning. I have a MacMini connected to it as well as some other stuff.
-I wish all devices used RF instead of IR and I wish they had true state instead of toggle mode.
-I wish the software was better.
