TV next
Chris Albrecht at NewTeeVee is so over new set top boxes.
Today he makes the point that there are too many ill fated attempts at the next generation set top boxes. He runs through several startups that are trying to make it work. And he believes that AppleTV v2.0 may still not be enough.
He might be right.
We don’t have a hardware problem next to our TVs. We have a software and services model problem.
And we need to think about what tv users actually want. Do we care if “Lost” comes from the internet, terrestrial or cable? I don’t think we do.
I dont’ believe it’s one size fits all. Different generations want different things. It used to be about channels & shows. Baby boomers may simply want better picture, on demand & better experience navigating..
On the other hand the UGC generation wants a completely different experience when they are in front of their TV. It’s not about more shows. It’s about sharing, tagging, personlization, no comprimise and social networking.
Someone is going to create the social firefoxTV-like OS for the UGC generation. And it will work on existing hardware. And it will be open.
Man, I can’t wait.
