Who needs friends?
Robert Scoble wrote an excellent post last night discussing and comparing the friends factor on different social web services.
One thing he has been saying a lot lately is that the key to Twitter is how many people you follow vs follow you:
“People still aren’t getting this. They didn’t get how I was using Twitter and still don’t. I follow the world’s best early adopters, business executives, and entrepreneurs. I really don’t care if I have a single follower. If I defined myself by my followers I’d always feel inadequate. If I define myself by the people who I follow, well, I follow the smartest, richest, coolest, funniest people in the world. That makes me smarter, richer, cooler, and funnier”
There is something really insightful about this. I feel the same way. I’m getting so much value from the people I follow on Twitter as well as Tumblr, Me.dium, and Flickr.
I need to start following more people. I wish more people used their real names on Twitter. Then I’d probably follow even more people that are following me right now.
