Buying music : singles vs albums

Since the coming of digital music sales it has become clear to many that album sales are weakening and consumers are buying singles instead.

But for me that’s not really the story at all.

I find that singles are how I typcially discover music. Either on last.fm, an artist website, tumblr or the hype machine. Blogging has been the single best thing to my music experience in a long long time.

And when I find a song I love, well, my next move is to check if Rhapsody has the entire album so I can embrace it on my Macs or on our Sonos. And if I know I’ll love it, I buy the album right away. The single can’t take the place of the full album for me. There are too many gems on these albums.

Why settle for 1 song when there are 8-10 more just waiting for you. And the full story is soo much better than a single.
