Will Hulu’s content owners think different?
I’ve been playing with Hulu since the days of the private beta.
We were investors in thePlatform (acquired by Comcast in 2006) which developed much of the underlying technology that powers Hulu.
So I’m not suprised that they did a wonderful job with the UI and technical components of that service. It looks great and much better than many predicted.
From the days of the private beta the content has been a quite slim. Decent breadth but very little depth. I was hoping that this was just part of being in beta.
The site opened to the general public last week. And guess what. No change to the content depth in my experience. Take one of my favorite shows BG. 5 shows. That’s a business decision not a techonology limitation.
It’s the same attitude that governs my VOD service from Comcast which delivers television programming. Yet after years they only offer a few CBS shows. No ABC, FOX, NBC etc.
Consumers have too many choices today. Getting away with artificial restrictions & rules (e.g. limiting content choice) isn’t going to work anymore.
