Apple’s $700 mistake
Last week I purchased a new MacBook Pro
I opted for the 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo. It comes by default with 2 gigs of RAM and a 160 gig drive.
It’s a sweet machine.
I wanted to upgrade to 4 gigs of RAM since that is the max for this computer. Apple charges $700 for the extra memory. Crucial charges $140. I went with Crucial.
I think Apple is making a big mistake here.
It’s silly that Apple charges so much more for a commodity part like RAM.
But more importantly, Macs run so much better with tons of RAM. By charging $700 I suspect most people just leave their Macs as is with 2 gigs which really is suboptimal at best.
I bet if Apple charged even $200 they would see a lot more folks upgrade and love their Macs even more.
ps: some of my friends tell me that Apple is about to announce a new MacBook Pro based on Penryn. So I bought mine thru Amazon which has a better return policy than the Apple Store. I’ll save that for a future post ;)
