Matt Marx is a researcher and doctoral candidate at the Harvard Business School. His research on the subject of non-competes is has been cited recently in various blogs.

I had Matt in my office a few weeks ago. I turned the camcorder on and we talked about his research and how non-competes impact innovation. Matt also experienced this issue first hand. In the 1990’s Matt worked at SpeechWorks and then had to leave Massachusetts to work at TellMe in CA because his non-compete agreement with SpeechWorks didn’t allow him to seek employment with another speech recognition company locally.

My video equipment and audio isn’t very good. Fortunately, Scott Kirsner of the Boston Globe was kind enough to edit the video and add text overlays to help with the content. I believe Scott is also going to have a column this Sunday in the Boston Globe on the subject of non-competes as well so I gladly gave the video over to Scott.

We now have a website for the newly created Alliance for Open Competition. This is an effort to end the practice of non-competes agreements in the State of Massachusetts. Check out the site to learn more about this important issue. And please consider adding your name to list of supporters.
