Seeking healthcare startups for those that need it...
I believe as a community we need to find a way to provide health care. When I think about poverty levels in this country, the sheer number of adults and children without healthcare, same sex couples denied coverage, well… all of it makes me nuts. Back in 1966, Martin Luther King, Jr said it best: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane” As a...

Sandy
The tweets, posts and photos of Sandy’s impact is crushing. It is extremely sad to see NYC go through another devastation like this.  I’d encourage you to donate to the Red Cross and do you best to help out. They need our help. Also, please share in the comments if there are other organizations helping with Sandy relief that need donations as well.  Thanks.

Modern day shoebox
I’m sure I’m dating myself quite a bit, but I fondly remember the days of going through old photos in a shoebox. Grabbing a chunk of photos and flipping through them was wonderful. It felt good and was my own little time machine. As we have moved from analog to digital we have sort of lost that shoebox feeling. All my old prints have be digitized years ago. New photos and things we create are...

Real. Honest. Fear
“I don’t know what I’m doing” How many times has a founder told that to a board or to his management team? Rarely, if ever. How often does a founder feel that way? Plenty. (Related: How often does a VC tell his partners that statement? Rarely, if ever, unfortunately.) The reason why a founder won’t open up and share that fear is because of another fear: the fear...

Good judgement vs being judgemental
One of the most positive people I’ve ever known is my wife, lauren. She thinks about the positive in everything, always mindful about the silver lining and brings a smile to those around her.  It’s a positive energy and force that is fun to be around.  Now, she certainly has her opinions about things and quite passionately so. But it’s a healthy strong opinion. Without being...

People Tagging (continued)
Earlier this summer, I wrote about how various services do “people tagging”.  It’s a really great and important feature in social apps.  One of the things that has been painful is how Instagram uses @mentions as their people tagging system — just like Twitter. Because when you share the Instagram photo to Twitter, it can get messed up. For example, my friend @ryan has a...

Are you happy with your work?
There is an “old” saying, when the MBA’s moved to Silicon Valley in the late 90’s the end was near. The rationale: they were in it for the money, not the mission. The reality is that MBA-line was a bit simplistic. I was in SV and I saw it first hand. Everyone wanted to work in a startup. And many had the wrong intentions. Not just MBAs. Hiring became very tricky because you were trying to...

Give, Get and the new Foursquare
The apps and communities that give me goosebumps are the ones where the more you give, the more you get. It’s a two way relationship and that really resonates with me. Yesterday, Foursquare released a new homepage experience. TechCrunch wrote about it yesterday and the headline tells it all — “Meet The New Foursquare, The One You Helped Build and Continue to Power”. That’s exactly right. We,...

My first roll of film (in ages)
A few weeks ago, I found a used Leica M6 in excellent condition. I love my Leica M9-P but wanted to try my hand at film. The M6 is a dreamy camera. Completely mechanical and everything is manual. Press the shutter and you hear a satisfying click.  I stuck in a roll of Kodak Portra 400 35mm film and a wide angle lens and took it with me every where for the past week or so.  Film is a lot of...

Tumblr Photoset
On Tumblr, you can post a variety of different things. A text post, or a quote, or a song, or a video. And of course you can post a photo. On any given day, I post at least one of those things right here on bijansabet.com which is on Tumblr.  Awhile back, Tumblr introduced photosets as new way to upload a series of photos in a single post to tell a story. I like that feature a lot and I’ve...
