How are the labels & artists going to make money?
There have been lots of attempts by the labels to figure out a new business model. Some of them embraced Apple and now they are fighting Apple. Many are embracing Amazon but I’m sure in due time they will fight Amazon for better economics. Some are trying to beat up startups. Some are trying to be innovative. Sometimes they come up with bad or really bad ideas. The answer has to be making...

When the big company tries to bully the small...
There are lots of reasons startups work with large established companies. For the startup, they need the large company as a customer, partner, distribution, etc. The large company benefits from this relationship too. They get to market much faster with a product than they could ever dream doing it by themsleves (typically). And they get a startup that is singularly focused on nailing their subject...

Live video can be dangerous. Especially when it’s in the wrong hands. Santo grabbed the nokia N95 on the table at lunch yesterday and started filming and it went out live via flixwagon. (disclaimer: very dorky video) I tried to tell Santo that with great power comes great responsibility. :)

Flixwagon is a cool service. The founders were nice enough to let me borrow one of their Nokia n95 handsets so I can try it out for a few days. Flixwagon lets you capture and broadcast live video from a mobile phone. I took this video earlier today and captured my colleague Rob and also Peter from Bug Labs via ichat. Once you hit the record button, a link goes out via Twitter, SMS and email to...

Simulscribe + iPhone
I’ve already blogged (endlessly) about how much I rely on Simulscribe. I’ve got Rob and Santo addicted as well at Spark. It’s super easy to use and works great. I’ve got my Blackberry set up so after 4 rings if I dont’ pick up the call goes to my Simulscribe number which then takes the voicemail, converts it to text and sends me an email. This is the equivalent to...

How Tumblr makes me better
reblogged via siminoff: I really believe that blogging has made me a much better founder and CEO of SimulScribe. Blogging has become such an important communications means with the market and really understanding it is hard without doing it. I started this blog because I saw what Fred Wilson, Josh Kopelman and Bijan Sabet were doing and realized that the reason they understood the space so...

Whose going to help publishers? part II
ESPN made big news today. They decided to sell their ads directly and not use any ad networks. That was big news because many ad networks have been quite successful. Lots of folks agreed that this was a good call. I do think that publishers aren’t always getting the best deal. They either leave money on the table, or the ads don’t reflect the brand properly or publishers don’t...

Buying music : singles vs albums
Since the coming of digital music sales it has become clear to many that album sales are weakening and consumers are buying singles instead. But for me that’s not really the story at all. I find that singles are how I typcially discover music. Either on last.fm, an artist website, tumblr or the hype machine. Blogging has been the single best thing to my music experience in a long long time. ...

What's all the fuss about Apple's Safari update
The biggest thing on Techmeme right now is Apple’s decision to distribute their Safari browser on Windows to update Safari. Lots of people are calling this close to malware since they believe many users won’t know what they are installing. John Lillly, the Mozilla CEO states: “Apple has made it incredibly easy—the default, even—for users to install ride along...
